Digita Oy, a radio and television broadcast company, is seeking to build a nationwide IoT network that will offer automation solutions and smart traffic in Finland.

The company is planning to provide network coverage that will be 85% of the population and around 95% of enterprises. The company estimates almost 20 million IoT sensors to be installed across the country by 2023.

Juha-Pekka Weckström, CEO of Digita Oy, said: “The range of the digital applications of IoT is almost unlimited – and already achievable. IoT offers great business opportunities for Digita and other Finnish companies in the coming years.”

Providing an example of the applications of the network, COO Markus Ala-Hautala, said: “An apartment rental company such as VVO Group can make use of the Digita IoT network in optimising their residents' living comfort and the healthiness of the building by adjusting living conditions on the basis of data transmitted over the network.”

Once the network is successfully expanded throughout Finland, the company plans to extend the services to other areas as well.

Back in June, French wireless network provider SIGFOX collaborated with Connected Finland, a company founded by veteran Finnish telco professionals, to roll out its IoT network all over the country by 2017. SIGFOX claims that there are more than seven million devices in its IoT network across all continents, and the company has added 14 countries to its global coverage map in the past 12 months alone.
