The IoT could help the UK cut 17.4M tonnes of CO2

A report from Vodafone and WPI Economics has found that emerging technologies like the IoT and 5G could help the UK cut 17.4 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Earlier this year, the UK enshrined in law a target to slash carbon emissions by 78 percent by 2035 as part of a bid to achieve net-zero by 2050. Achieving the UK’s target, and hopefully exceeding it, will require taking advantage of every possible tool.

Kaspersky: Attacks on IoT devices double in a year

Research from the cybersecurity gurus at Kaspersky has found that attacks targeting IoT devices have doubled over the past year.

The rapid proliferation of IoT devices, combined with often poor security, makes them an increasingly attractive target for hackers. Analysts at McKinsey estimate that 127 new devices are connected every second.

Dan Demeter, Security Expert at Kaspersky, said:

Smart cities will help fight climate change but more awareness is needed

Smart cities will be key in tackling climate change, but research suggests that public awareness of that fact is low.

According to research from Milestone Systems, 80 percent of Brits want their local authority to take more action to fight climate change. 230 councils in the UK have already declared a climate emergency in their regions.

However, under half (47%) of Brits are aware that increased use of data and technology can help in delivering improvements that can...

Berg Insight: Global cellular IoT connections grew 12% last year to reach 1.7B

Research from Berg Insight suggests the number of global cellular IoT connections continued to grow at a healthy pace last year.

An overall increase in the number of IoT connections is unsurprising over the past year as more people became accustomed to remote working and finding ways to make their home environments more productive and enjoyable. However, most home IoT connections aren’t cellular.

Berg Insight says the global number of cellular IoT subscribers increased...

Research finds that 24% of Brits aren’t securing their IoT devices

Research has found that a concerningly large number of Brits aren’t taking any actions to secure their IoT devices.

According to research from NordVPN, Brits are taking the least action to secure their devices of the seven countries surveyed.

Approximately 95 percent of Brits now have at least one IoT device in their household, more than any other of the surveyed countries. It’s a statistic that shows the potential scale of the problem, yet 24 percent aren’t taking...

Eseye ‘State of IoT Adoption’ report highlights deployment challenges

Eseye has released a report examining the state of IoT adoption and the challenges enterprises are facing.

76 percent of UK respondents said their IoT project was “at best” only somewhat successful. That’s not exactly an encouraging report for a technology that’s been hyped as driving huge efficiency improvements and generating massive amounts of value.

Despite the lack of resounding success in current deployments, 85 percent of the UK respondents said that the...

Berg Insight: Smart waste sensor market to grow 29.8% annually through 2025

Research from Berg Insight forecasts that rapid adoption of smart waste sensors will result in 29.8% annual growth through 2025.

Cities around the world are rapidly-adopting smart waste sensors to help manage resources, optimise collections, and reduce cases of unsightly (and often smelly) overflowing bins.

The wireless sensors are increasingly being pre-integrated into waste bins but existing units can also be retrofitted. By 2025, the number of smart bins is expected...

Eclipse: IoT and edge computing adoption is accelerating

The latest IoT and edge computing survey from the Eclipse Foundation highlights that enterprises are putting their foot on the accelerator in terms of adoption.

47 percent of respondents have already deployed IoT solutions while an additional 39 percent plan to do so within the next 12-24 months.

Edge computing adoption is also subsequently increasing as organisations look for increased performance from their devices including reduced latency, improved security and...
