In order to assess the interoperability and end-to-end functionality of the oneM2M Release 1 Specifications, 29 organisations and companies tested their equipment together at the headquarters of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in Sophia-Antipolis, France.

ETSI and TTA (Telecommunications Technology Association of Korea) co-hosted the event, backed by the European Commission. oneM2M is a global standards initiative for Machine to Machine (M2M) and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The testing was successful as interoperability across varying use cases was achieved. Participants were also able to outline scope for improvement and provide clarifications for the oneM2M specifications.

Dr. Omar Elloumi of Alcatel Lucent, oneM2M’s Technical Plenary Chair, said: “Our Release 2 specifications, currently under development, provide an interworking framework across IoT protocols, including OMA’s LightWeight M2M, AllSeen Alliance’s AllJoyn and the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC), preserving the investments already made in each. This is the ‘missing link’ which will help accelerate IoT deployments.”

Prof. JaeSeung Song of Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), oneM2M’s Test Working Group Chair, said that oneM2M would conduct two interoperability events on an annual basis, with next event slated for May 2015 in Korea. Cisco Systems, Huawei Technologies, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, Qualcomm Germany and Sierra Telecom were among the participants at the first oneM2M Interoperability Test Event.
